I had the Sports with Roland crew come through for a bull session — Roland Alaniz, Merri Garcia, and Andy Gomez. Fair warning up front: this episode is unfiltered, adults-only, and exactly what you'd expect when you put three comedians in a room with no real agenda.
Roland Alaniz hosts Sports with Roland, a podcast that started about four years ago when he, Andy, and their original co-host Adrian started spitballing the idea on a road trip to a gig. Adrian bought the mics, got the laptop, and kicked the whole thing off. Then at some point Adrian quit — on air, during an episode — and Roland called Andy. The pitch was simple: you're funny, we need funny, you're in. Andy showed up thinking he was just going to do comedy bits, then found out he was also responsible for the intros. He's been doing a different voice every episode since.
Merri Garcia rounds out the crew. She's a comedian in Corpus Christi and, as she put it, she got the job because she has the biggest bits. The show drops every Sunday on Spotify and they're over 200 episodes in.
We talked about the marijuana ordinance and what downtown designated smoke areas could look like. We debated the new Michael movie — Merri liked it, Andy said it was written like a Lifetime movie, which Merri also admitted is exactly her thing. We got into how comedians are using podcasting to workshop material, the cop move Andy does with his head out the window when he gets pulled over, JFK conspiracy theories, comedy influences (Chappelle's Killing Them Softly was the first standup DVD Roland ever bought), and upcoming shows including a ladies' comedy night at Rich's Billiards.
It's a bull session. Come hang.
